Insurance for web designers

Posted on 12 Mar 2012 In: Insurance, Travel

Another topic which as a creative tends to get over looked all the time is Insurance. Personally, it bores me to tears – us creatives are not meant to be bogged down with such things. But, unfortunately I’ve realised in my older age that there is no avoiding the necessities of life and often the ones that disinterest me so much. So again, I’ve decided I need to look into this insurance business side of things and find out what it’s all about, how it applies to me and get it done once and for all.

But where does one start? there are so many different types of insurance. This is where my research as taken me.

It doesn’t matter whether you are running a web design firm or any other type of independent venture or business, you should consider getting among others, a life insurance policy along with other business related insurance policies. Companies that are in the services industry need to think about a variety of policies that will protect their business from anything untoward happening. The following policies are just some of the ones any design firm should consider.

Liability insurance

A web design firm should consider liability insurance. For instance, if a logo or a business card they design ends up with copyright issues due to negligence of existing designs or patents, and they do not have a policy like this, they can be fully liable for all damages incurred because of this. If someone would decide to sue the company that violated the copyright or design patent with a logo, then the responsibility could fall on the web design firm. This is why liability insurance is needed in these cases.

Home and contents insurance

Web design firms might also like to get some home and contents insurance for the place where they work. Generally, there are machines and computers that have great value and if these were to be stolen or damaged in any way it could present a great loss to the company.

Some home and contents packages also include a clause for life insurance, but this is not always the case so you would still not be wrong in trying to find a policy that covers for this separately.

Whatever you decide, you should consult with a qualified insurance professional to help you determine which policies you might need to get for your web design business, whether it’s a comprehensive life insurance policy that also contains coverage for income protection or a general insurance for stolen goods or liability.

Travel Insurance

Many of us designers travel for work, it’s usually either a fun trip or a necessary one. All in all, to make the trip a better one travel insurance should always be factored into the trip as many companies do not cover any issues incurred on a business trip as they see that as your personal responsibility.
